Hold Fast to Wisdom

“Acquire wisdom! Acquire understanding!
Do not forget nor turn away
from the words of my mouth”
Proverbs 4:5 nasb

“Hold on to wisdom,
and it will take care of you.
Love it, and it will keep you safe.”
Proverbs 4:6 ncv

What is wisdom? Man’s definition says it is understanding, knowledge, sense, insight, perception, astuteness, intelligence, and good judgment. To me—this is my opinion or definition—wisdom is the application of knowledge. The Bible says it is “the fear of the Lord.”

Psalm 111:10 (ncv) tells us Wisdom begins with respect for the Lord; those who obey his orders have good understanding…” Fear or reverence for the Lord is the foundation for true wisdom.

“…fools despise wisdom and instruction.” These words follow “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” in Proverbs 1:7.

And Proverbs 9:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (nasb)

So how does one acquire wisdom and understanding?

I have known plenty of people who have read the Bible. Many can quote scripture or at least attempt to. However, until we fear the Lord, love Him, and reverence His word, we only have knowledge and not wisdom.

Once we have this wisdom, we are to hold fast to it. Proverbs four goes on to tell us we should prize… treasure … exalt… embrace… take a firm hold and don’t let go of "her"!!! We are to be steadfast and faithful with the True Wisdom of God’s word. We are to continually seek "her" with all of our heart, soul, and might.

AND—we are to live accordingly.

“Happy, blessed, joyful are those who follow, keep, obey the Lord’s teachings, instructions, commandments, and continually search for Him with their whole heart.” Psalm 119:1-2 (a mix of nasb, ncv, and  nlt)

God’s wisdom will take care of you…protect you and provide for you.

“A house is built by wisdom
and becomes strong through good sense.
Through knowledge its rooms are filled
with all sorts of precious riches and valuables.”
Proverbs 24:3-4 nlt
“If you need wisdom,
ask our generous God,
and he will give it to you.
He will not rebuke you for asking.”
James 1:5 nlt

nasb is New American Standard Bible – ncv is New Century Version – nlt is New Living Translation
